Hezbollah’s call for a ceasefire on Tuesday shows the terrorist group is retreating and has suffered “damage”, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.

Hezbollah deputy leader Naim Qassem said in a televised address that the Iran-backed group’s capabilities were intact and its fighters were repelling Israeli ground incursions, despite “painful blows” inflicted on Israel in recent weeks.

Kassem said the group supports efforts by Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah ally, to secure a cease-fire, without elaborating on any conditions Hezbollah wants.

“For a year, you’ve had the world asking for this cease-fire, you’ve had Hezbollah refusing to agree to such a cease-fire, and now that it’s retreating and damaged, all of a sudden they’ve changed their tune and want a cease-fire,” the US official said. .

“We continue to ultimately want a diplomatic solution to this conflict,” Miller clarified.
