15-year-old Natalie Rapnow who went by the name “Samantha,” authorities have identified as the suspect in Monday’s shooting at the Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin that left two people dead, a teacher and a student, and six others injured.

The evidence so far indicates that the 15-year-old girl committed suicide immediately after the incident. Police claimed they found her dead when they arrived at the school, with a gun next to her. No officer fired at her.

Madison Police Chief Sean Barnes said, “Today is a sad day not only for Madison, but for our entire country. We have to do a better job in our community,” he said.

He added that police have not determined the 15-year-old’s motive and that the suspect’s family is cooperating with police as part of the investigation. Her official cause of death will be announced by the medical examiner pending the results of an autopsy.

A second-grader was the first to call police about an active shooter inside the school, according to Chief Barnes. Officers responded to the call at around 11:00 local time (17:00 GMT) on Monday. The 15-year-old started shooting inside a co-ed study hall.

Barbara Wiers, the school’s director of communications, said the school had held a drill a few months ago in case of a similar incident and that teachers were informed about how to behave and what to do.

Police have not yet named any of the victims.

Authorities have appealed for witnesses who saw or heard about the attack to speak to police and that they hope these reports will shed light on the 15-year-old’s motive.

US President Joe Biden said the shooting incident was “shocking and senseless”.

“Students across our country should learn how to read and write — not have to learn how to bend over and cover up,” said Biden, who also called on Congress to act immediately on legislation that could prevent more gun violence.

Abundant Life Christian School has approximately 400 students from kindergarten through high school. The school remains closed while police continue to investigate.
