Response from Berlin

About a year ago, the German investigative network Correctiv brought to light a secret meeting between members of the far-right AfD and neo-Nazis from Germany and Austria in Potsdam. At the time, plans for mass pogroms and mandatory “repatriation” of immigrants with racist criteria of “purity” were at the center.

The same network now reveals another secret meeting of AfD MPs with neo-Nazis in Switzerland in mid-December. In particular, it is about the member of the Bundestag, Roger Bekamp, and the local member of parliament in Brandenburg, Lena Cotre. The Switzerland meeting was attended, among others, by members of the banned in Germany neo-Nazi organization “Blood and Honor”, as well as the “sister” Swiss neo-Nazi organization “Junge Tat”.

“Repatriations” with DNA tests

What is of particular interest are the political deals between German MPs and young neo-Nazis, with Correctiv claiming that the two German politicians offered them the opportunity to work in the parliamentary institutions, with the role of collaborators and the ultimate goal of promoting racist ideology.

At the same time shock new evidence about the “repatriation” plan, with Coutre even proposing DNA tests or voice analyzes to determine the countries of origin of new arrivals in order to quickly deport them. She has also reportedly proposed deporting people with an immigrant background who have obtained German citizenship if they do not comply with German laws.

And all this coincides with a particularly tense pre-election period in Germany. Just yesterday the German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier dissolved the parliament by presidential decree and thus the country is officially heading towards the February 23 elections. At the same time, the attack in Magdeburg casts a heavy shadow on the election campaign, with the issues of security and immigration policy being at the top of the agenda for all parties. In the meantime, the far-right Alternative for Germany remains firmly in second place at the federal level, with a percentage exceeding 19% and with a constant upward trend in the latest opinion polls.

Police operation against violent far-right

At the same time yesterday, Friday, a major police operation in Berlin, Saxony, Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt was underway until late at night to locate at least eight far-right youths, aged 16 to 21, who on December 14 had attacked with violence against members of the Social Democrats at a party election booth at the Lichterfelde Ost station in the Steglitz-Chellendorf of Berlin. Three of them are already in custody, while the rest are being investigated for criminal offences.

They allegedly immobilized the SPD members, threw them to the ground and started kicking them, wearing military fatigues. Accordingly, two policemen who rushed to the area were also victims of an attack by the same young far-rights.

Earlier in the day in the Friedrichshain area of Berlin, dozens of far-right activists had demonstrated, including probably the perpetrators of the attack on SPD members and police officers. The young far-right, according to police sources, are members of the far-right organization “German Youth First” (Deutsche Jugend zuerst), known for its participation in far-right marches but also for violence against “political opponents”.
