Saudi Arabia, a country known for desert and oil, has begun an impressive environmental project for a few years: it intends to plant 10 billion trees in the coming years. This project is called Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) and started in 2021.

How did we start and where are we today

The idea was started by Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who wants to change the future of the country, not only economically but also ecologically. The plan is huge: Saudi Arabia not only wants to plant trees within it, but also help neighboring countries with a second initiative, Middle East Green Initiative (MGI), targeting a total of 50 billion trees in the Middle East.

The initiative began because Saudi Arabia is facing serious environmental problems. The desertification is intense, as large areas of land become barren and inappropriate for cultivation or for living plants and animals. In addition, air quality is bad, especially in cities, due to dust and pollution. Temperatures are very high and are constantly increasing, making it even more difficult for residents and organizations.
