European Commission President Ursula von der Laien will face a proposal for the first time this week in the European Parliament a motion of censure supported by a share of MEPs from the European Conservatives and Reforms (ECR) team and other far -right groups.

The debate on the motion of censure will take place this afternoon in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, during which the Commission Chairman will be called upon to answer questions of MEPs about the lack of transparency of the executive.

Ursula von der Laien will call for a vote of confidence from the European Parliament in a vote on Thursday, July 10, which will not be secret.

The motion of censure was submitted by MEP Georgue Popea (ECR, Romania), who accuses von der Layen of opacity on the occasion of the “Pfizergate” scandal. On July 2, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, announced that a motion of censure was filed against the “von der Laien II” committee, which meets the conditions for submission.

The motion of censure is supported by 79 MEPs, who, however, have no chance of overthrowing the German President of the European Parliament during the vote on Thursday afternoon. Several MEPs of the ECR, including Italian MEPs Georgia Meloni, have distanced themselves from the censure proposal filed by the Romanian MEP. However, the motion of censure is expected to be supported by some MEPs from the “Europe of the Sovereign Nations” and the “Patriots of Europe”, including Jordan Bardela of the “national concentration” of France.

The leaders of the Social Democrats and the Renew have stated that they will vote for confidence in von der Laen, but today’s debate on the motion of censure could be an opportunity for the “pro -European” majority of the European Parliament. The Social Democrats and the Liberals (Renew) regularly criticize von der Layen for her increasingly vertical power structure, to challenge environmental rules, as well as her cooperation with the ECR, such as with Italian MEPs.

“The EPP should carefully consider who wants to build bridges, with us or those who are starting censure suggestions,” a Social Democrats said.

For Renew’s French MEP, Valerie Hayer, today’s debate could be a “real opportunity for political clarification” and “we will clearly ask EPP who wants to work with”.

For his part, EPP President Manfred Weber has spoken of “Putin puppets in the European Parliament” who are “trying to undermine European unity and throw the committee in a period of global upheaval and economic crisis”, adding that “this is a shame”.
