Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, described the atrocities in the Ukrainian city of Bukha as a “staged challenge” in which Kyiv accused Russian troops of committing war crimes against civilians.
“From the outset, it was very clear that this was nothing more than a provocation aimed at discrediting and depriving the Russian military of all its human qualities, as well as exerting political pressure on Russia,” Nebenzia told a news conference. .
He insisted that the Russian army did not commit “inhumane atrocities against civilians.” “This is not the case, it never was and it never will be,” he said, adding that Moscow had “evidence to prove it” which it intends to present to the Security Council “as soon as possible”.
Russia called for an emergency meeting of the Security Council yesterday, but Britain, which holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council in April, rejected the request, saying it was the third meeting scheduled for Ukraine. Mr Nebenzia criticized the decision.
