The president of Argentina, Javier Millay, named a new candidate to lead his party’s ballot in a crucial election showdown on midterm elections on October 26. However, his face will not appear on the ballot.

The liberal-anarchist leader chose him Diego Santilli to save his election campaign in his province Buenos Airesafter the withdrawal of the original favorite, Jose Luis Espertdue to revelations about relationships with a drug dealer. Miley’s party had also suffered overwhelming defeat in the province’s local elections last month, which caused fall in the markets.

Election authorities ruled this week that it is too late to print new ballots for the national parliamentary elections. In Argentina, colorful ballots include photos of the first two candidates and then a list of the rest. Miley had chosen the bald Espert and the actress Karen Reichart to adorn his party’s ballot paper with their smiles.

Sandili, a former party official PRO of the former president Mauricio Macri, enlisted his creativity in a campaign advertising. Holding a marker and a larger version of the actual ballot, he uploaded videos to social media to explain the problem to voters.

“On the ballot you will see a picture of Karen and another person who has withdrawn his candidacy,” Santilli said in a post Tuesday night, hours after Miley met with the president Donald Trump in the White House. “To vote for the redhead, mark the bald!” he added humorously.

Santilli, a veteran politician who has previously fallen out with the Peronist party, blamed “political dinosaurs” for not allowing his photo to be placed on the new ballot.

The video provoked laughter, embarrassment but also irony on social media in Argentina, reflecting it jerky and improvised tactics of Miley’s party in the run-up to the national mid-term elections.

Argentinians will vote half the deputies of the lower house and one third of the senators. It is Miley’s biggest electoral test since winning the presidency two years ago, and its outcome could determine whether the Trump administration will offer Argentina the much needed financial support from the US.
