Afghanistan and Pakistan have agreed to extend the 48-hour ceasefire that had ended today at 16:00 Greek time until the conclusion of the talks, at delegation level, between the two countries in Doha, according to four sources cited by the Reuters agency, specifically three Pakistani security officials and a Taliban source.
According to the same sources, the Pakistani delegation is already in Doha, while the Afghan delegation is expected to arrive in the Qatari capital on Saturday.
The two South Asian neighbors have been embroiled in fierce ground clashes in recent days, with Pakistan launching airstrikes along their disputed border killing dozens of people and injuring hundreds before an initial 48-hour ceasefire was reached.
Nevertheless, the tension remains, as evidenced by today’s suicide attack near the Afghan border, in which seven Pakistani soldiers were killed, as Pakistani security officials announced earlier.
The soldiers were killed in an attack by gunmen on a Pakistani army camp in North Waziristan that left 13 people injured, five security officials said.
While one militant drove an explosives-laden vehicle into the wall of a fort serving as a camp, two others tried to enter the site and were shot dead, the sources said.
Pakistan’s military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
