US: Abortion Arrested in Oklahoma – Wave of Reactions

by

The Oklahoma House of Representatives passed a bill Thursday prohibits abortion from conception, which means that the conservative stronghold in the American South is now the one with the strictest legislation from end to end of the USA on this issue.

The “Draconian law” was passed at a time when the right to abortion in the country is threatened by the Supreme Court, which, according to a document revealed by the Politico website, is preparing to overturn it, 50 years after its historic decision to legalize across the country such interventions.

For the law to enter into force, it remains only to be signed by Governor Kevin Stitt. The Republican had already assured that he would sign any law imposing further restrictions on abortion.

Inspired by a law passed in Texas in September, the Oklahoma text passed paved the way for ordinary citizens to report to the authorities any person suspected of having had an abortion or being involved in such an operation.

The abortion number, according to the text, does not, however, include “the use, prescription, supply or sale of the next day pills, or any kind of contraception”.

On May 3, Governor Stitt announced that he had signed a law banning abortion after the sixth week of pregnancy.

“I want Oklahoma to become the most pro-life state in the country,” he said at the time, using the terminology of American opponents of abortion.

The Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris stigmatized the Oklahoma parliament’s decision, seeing the “latest series of blatant attacks on women” by its members.

Ms. Harris also called on Americans to elect politicians who advocate for the right to abortion “at the local, state and federal levels,” as “it has never been so urgent,” she said on Twitter.

The Planned Parenthood organization, which defends the right to abortion, has announced that it will take legal action against the state of Oklahoma.

“This ban must be stopped – like all the other bans that were passed in this state last month,” the group added.

Oklahoma has been welcoming thousands of Texans seeking abortion for months, following the passage in September of a 2021 law banning all abortions from the moment an fetal heartbeat begins to sound on an ultrasound, in other words four weeks after conception, when it is likely that the pregnant woman is still unaware that she is pregnant.

Although the majority of the US population supports it, according to recent polls, the right to abortion has been a social issue that has deeply divided Americans since January 1973, when the Supreme Court announced its ruling in the Rowe v. Wade case.

Should the Supreme Court overturn this decision, as he is reportedly preparing to do, The authorities in 26 conservative states, mainly in the central and southern part of the country (eg Wyoming, Tennessee, South Carolina …) are simply ready to ban abortion altogether.

Experts estimate that one in four American women will probably have an abortion at least once in their lifetime. Of these, 75% have a low income, 59% are already mothers, 55% have problems that prevent her from becoming a mother.
