Leticia Cazarré and her husband, actor Juliano Cazarré, are awaiting the birth of their sixth child. But the discovery of the pregnancy was a blow for the couple, Letícia revealed to Caras magazine, as she had just been diagnosed with burnout.

Burnout or Professional Exhaustion Syndrome is a disorder with symptoms such as extreme exhaustion, stress and physical exhaustion linked to exhausting situations at work. It affects 30% of the approximately 100 million Brazilian workers, according to figures from Isma, the International Stress Management Association.

“In the first few days, instead of feeling that joy of a new life arriving, I felt a lot of worry, I was wondering if I would cope, if my body would handle it”, explained Leticia to Caras.

Parental burnout is not a clinical diagnosis that can appear in anyone’s medical record, but many psychologists recognize it as a subtype of burnout, a work-related phenomenon now recognized by the WHO (World Health Organization) as a syndrome.

Leticia and Juliano are married and parents of Vicente, 13, Inácio, 11, Gaspar, 4, Maria Madalena, 2, and Maria Guilhermina, 1. They are awaiting the birth of a boy, Estevão.

She explained that, as part of the treatment, she tried to rest more. “I was sleeping four hours a night for months and, during the day, it was intense, with the children to take care of, all the demands that a big family has. And then, my body started to improve, my mind too and I started to feel more myself. Now, I think everything will be fine”, he said in the interview.

The couple went through a turbulent 2023, with comings and goings in the hospital. The youngest daughter, Maria Guilhermina, was diagnosed with Ebstein’s Anomaly, a very rare heart disease even before birth. In less than two years of life, she underwent several surgeries and treatments against the disease.

Parents should pay attention to signs such as fatigue, irritability, changes in sleep, appetite and mood, as well as various body aches. What differentiates parental burnout is the severity of these symptoms and the extent to which they are affecting the person’s daily life, according to Jennifer Yen, a psychiatrist at UTHealth Houston.
