Painting created by Bob Dylan in 1968 and traded it for an astrological chart sold at auction for $196,000 at auction.

The untitled work is one of the self-taught artist’s first and has never been shown before, according to RR Auction, which organized the auction.

The abstract painting is a collage of bold colors juxtaposed with recognizable forms such as musical symbols, bull horns, bow ties and a pair of eyes. A red outline of a man in a brimmed hat – which some say could be a self-portrait – sits at the top of the canvas.

Dylan created the project for Sandi LePando, a resident of Woodstock, New York, while recovering from a motorcycle accident.

“Sandy was not only one of the most beautiful women in Woodstock she was a mystic, psychic and astrologer and creator of astrology charts for her friends” said Ann Margaret Daniel historian who wrote the text for the Bob Dylan work that was auctioned.

The painting remained in LePando’s family. It was recently rediscovered at the residence of Sandy Lepanto’s ex-husband, Anthony Lepanto.

Very few of Dylan’s early works are known and even fewer have been offered for sale at auction. The most famous of his paintings from this time period is the cover for their album The Band’s 1968 ‘Music from Big Pink’.
