Greece’s reaction to the charity gala last Saturday at British Museum, in the room where the Parthenon sculptures.

The luxurious reception as part of the Pink Ball which included dinner, music and pink decoration and brought together 800 celebrities of the British artistic and political life – with the invitation reaching 2,000 pounds – naturally caused strong reactions.

This was the second glamorous gala organized by the British Museum in the Parthenon Sculpture Hall, where the Parthenon Sculptures are housed, causing strong reactions on the Greek side.

The Greek side, through the Ministry of Culture, characterized this charity gala, as it has been baptized, as “offensive action that endangers the exhibits”. At the same time, the only photograph from the interior of the Museum that was published, was actually withheld from the British media for obvious reasons.

Also present is the head of the campaign for the return of the Sculptors

“The British Museum does not comment on it” while in yesterday’s communication with ERT he emphasized that the protection of the collection is a non-negotiable priority and that every request to use the rooms is strictly evaluated based on risks and respect for the exhibits.”

It should be noted that the president of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Sculptors, Janet Suzman stated that “Culture Minister Lina Mendoni is not wrong to protest, characterizing the dinner as rather provocative” while underlining that “the Sculptures radiate power through their immobility and symbolism”, adding however that even such events lead to more people getting to know them.

This particular dinner, with a very high ticket price, was held in the context of a charity organization with the aim of raising funds for the renovation of the British Museum and had guests from the artistic and political spheres, while it is sensational that the Ed Veseyhead of the Parthenon Project campaign for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures.
