Thessaloniki: Unknowns stripped schools of cables in Thessaloniki

The school guard, when he took over duty on Friday morning and noticed the damage, informed the school’s management and the police were notified, as were the competent services of the Municipality of Thessaloniki

Cables, with a total length of 200 meters, were removed by unknown persons in Western Thessaloniki, in the Xyladika area, from the courtyard of a school complex that houses the 30th Gymnasium, the 64th Primary School, the 95th Kindergarten, the 4th Special Primary and the Special Kindergarten.

The break-in took place on two occasions, the first on the night of Thursday 21-22 July and the second over the weekend. The school guard, when he took over duty on Friday morning and noticed the damage, informed the school’s management and the police were notified, as well as the competent services of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, whose crews proceeded with the necessary actions so that there was no risk of an accident.

At the same time, the Deputy Mayor for Education, Ioanna Kosmopoulou, in an email message to the Lefkos Pyrgos police station, requested an increase in police patrols. After the second burglary, the director of the high school filed a lawsuit against unknown persons, while the signage staff collected evidence that there was evidence at the scene of the burglary, where the electricity supply clocks are installed.

The economic cost of the damage, according to a first estimate, is between 8 and 10 thousand euros. The school complex is currently not supplied with electricity, while the telephone lines, the internet and the lightning rod are not working either.

“They removed the wiring without entering the premises, which is why the alarm did not go off. In the yard, they went to the PPC clocks and stripped whatever copper cable there was,” Ms. Kosmopoulou told APE-MBE, noting that the perpetrators moved unmolested and the damage was noticed in the morning by the security guard, who, as predicted , works on an 8-hour and daily basis.

“I sent the informational message to the police chief on Saturday, pointing out the need for increased policing, as the scene is dark,” noted Ms. Kosmopoulou, adding that repair procedures are now underway.

The preliminary investigation into the incident is being carried out by the White Tower Security Department and according to police sources, patrols and increased policing plans are being adjusted in all cases of crime.
