More than 17.5 kilograms of cocaine were detected and seized during a coordinated action by the Greek and Cypriot authorities, as well as the British Bases Police, in a container at the port of Piraeusderived from Ecuador and with destination Cyprus. At the same time, two people who would receive the quantity were arrested.

According to the Hellenic Police Headquarters, investigations were preceded by the Narcotics Prosecution Sub-Directorate of the Attica Security, in collaboration with the 3rd Import Customs of Piraeus, the Narcotics Prosecution and Smuggling Directorate of the Coast Guard – Hellenic Coast Guard and the Weapons and Narcotics Department of the S. D.O.E.

In particular, the authorities found in a refrigerated container a quantity of 17 kilograms and 690 grams of cocaine, in 14 packages, which were found to have the final destination of Limassol, Cyprus.

The relevant information was brought to the attention of the Drug Prosecution Coordinating Body and after a relevant prosecutor’s order, the process of controlled transfer and delivery was implemented, in cooperation with the Cypriot Authorities and the British Bases Police. In the early hours of the morning, today, two people were arrested who went to the place where the container had been moved and received the drug packages.

It is noted that the investigation of the case continues by the Police of the British Bases in cooperation with the Anti-Narcotics Service of the Cyprus Police and the EL.AS.

Relevant information about this large amount of drugs was given on 19/7/2022 by the Hellenic Police to the Cyprus Police, according to which the drugs were detected by members of the Greek Police to be hidden in a container, which contained a quantity of fruit, coming from the Ecuador region with final destination Cyprus.

After relevant consultation with EL.AS, it was decided to carry out a controlled delivery of the cargo in Cyprus.

On 26/7/22 the mentioned container arrived at the Port of Limassol, where with the assistance of the Customs Authorities the process of controlled delivery began.

On 27/7/22 the container was transferred to a fruit and vegetable import warehouse in the area of ​​the British Bases of Akrotiri.

The cargo was then placed under constant surveillance and at two in the morning today, two persons, aged 40 and 46, were seen cautiously entering the container area, removing a metal cover and receiving the drug packages. Immediately members of the Police of the British Bases with the help of members of the YKAN intervened and arrested the persons in question.
