The sailboat with the irregulars Immigrants in the Strait of Kafirea in Evia it sank 300 meters from the coast, the representative of the port told SKAI Nikos Kokkalas.

“The search for the missing migrants is ongoing. Unfortunately, the weather is not our ally, there are winds of 7 to 8 Beaufort, with gusts that reach even 9 Beaufort,” he stressed.

Mr. Kokkalas clarified that the investigations are being conducted based on the statements of the rescued persons that there were about 68 people on the sailboat, i.e. 59 people are missing.

“The boat started from Smyrna, 300 meters before reaching the coast it capsized, and all nine were in the sea and managed to swim to the rocky island (Mandilo),” he stressed. “None of them had life-saving equipment, not even a life jacket,” said the port official.

As he explained, the traffickers take advantage of the fact that sailing ships float quite a lot in our seas and islands, they sometimes sail in international waters, and that’s how they succeeded and approached the coasts.
