On the occasion of the Climate Summit in the city of Belem, Brazil, the leaders of 8 Amazonian countries just yesterday announced the creation of a new Organization for the protection of the forest, which is considered “the lung of the Earth”.

They named the Organization: “Amazonian Union for the fight against deforestation”. Missing from the picture was the ninth leader, French President Macron, who even had a personal invitation from Brazilian President Lula.

French environmentalists do not understand how it is possible for President Macron to miss such an opportunity for the climate and prefer to remain at the presidential resort in Bergason, choosing to be represented by the French ambassador Brigitte Collet.

France is considered the ninth country with a presence in the Amazon region through its possession of Guyana, most of which is covered by the Amazon forest. The leaders of Guyana also did not understand why they were not informed and why they did not represent France themselves, since they know the problems of the place.

Contempt or political discomfort?

Many comment on Macron’s “contempt”, which is not understood when he himself in 2019 made his revolution by rejecting the trade agreement between the EU and the “Mercosur” Free Trade Area, with four Latin American countries, including and Brazil, accusing then-president Bolsonaro of not honoring his climate commitments.

Others, of course, are looking for deeper political reasons, which made Emmanuel Macron not move to Brazil. In particular, the French president had expressed the desire to participate in the Summit of the so-called BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). The meeting is scheduled for August 22-24 in Johannesburg. However, South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor informed the Elysee yesterday that it is not possible to invite the president. A Russian veto is believed to be the reason.
