On Monday, February 5, the process for the demolition of the house in Platanias in Pelion begins, which for six months was supported by a bus of the Interurban KTEL of Magnesia, which was removed. The image of the three-story residence in the area of Platanias, in South Pelion, having been turned after the disastrous floods of last September and “resting” for six months on the roof of a bus, went around Greece.

The building, despite the fact that it had not been damaged inside, was damaged unsuitable and for demolition. In the previous days, following the order of the Magnesia Interurban KTEL, an earthworks crew proceeded with the partial removal of the bus.

The president of Interurban KTEL of Magnesia, Dimitris Kolyndrinis, said that the bus was removed at the initiative of KTEL, despite the fact that it has not been made clear whose responsibility the removal was. “We considered that it was our duty as a long-distance bus company, since there was one of our buses, to be the ones to take care of its removal,” explained Mr. Kolyndrinis and added that it was a particularly difficult process.

“We went last week with a crane and a small hoe, but the bus was deeply buried, making it impossible to get out. For this reason, we went again yesterday (the day before yesterday) with a big crane and a big hoe and after hours the bus was removed”, he stressed.

The process of removing the bus, which was wedged for almost six months, on the foundation of the house it lasted more than six hours. “After a long operation of almost six hours we got most of it out. The bus was in the bed and the loaded materials that went inside made it even more difficult to move due to the weight. Also, the building sat out of the water and stepped on the front side of the vehicle. All is well in the end”, was the remark of Constantinos Rigas, whose family business dealing with earthworks undertook the removal.

The bus was not operational from the first moment, as it had been heavily damaged since the morning of September 5, when the bad weather broke out in the area.

“That morning, the bus from Volos to Platanias ran normally and, while the return of the bus was expected, the river “swelled”, as a result of which it was swept away and ended up under the building. Fortunately, there were no passengers inside and the driver had abandoned it when he realized what was going to happen,” said Mr. Kolyndrinis.

For his part, the deputy mayor of Sepiados, Nikos Mammas, said that next week the procedures for the demolition of the house, which has taken a serious turn, will begin.

“By order of the KTEL, machines were used to remove the bus that had ended up under the house in Platanias. It was a difficult process, as the bus was for a long time wedged in place, but most of it was removed, only a little of the front part with the wheels remained. As of Monday, the municipality of South Pelion has commissioned a contractor to start demolishing the house, which is dangerous,” added Mr. Mammas.
