Thousands are the pilgrims flocking to Mount Athos this year to find themselves in the orchard of Our Lady for Easter, according to the voria.gr.

As the political commander of Mount Athos said in ERT. Alkibiadis Stefanis, about 13,000 pilgrims this year will be in the monastic state for the Resurrection of the Lord.

“From Good Monday to Good Wednesday the climate was calm, but from Good Thursday and then the world is very much, there are many who come to Easter, I find friends from all over Greece here,” said Stefanis.

He even stressed that there are two data that differentiate the numbers of Easter pilgrims and one is the war in Ukraine.

“This has made a large number of Ukrainian and Russian believers do not come to the mountain, but pilgrims of the Russian and Ukrainian diaspora come from other parts of Europe,” the Mountain Commander noted.

Also, developments in the Middle East have greatly restricted pilgrims to Jerusalem and the Holy Sepulcher, with all these visitors turning to Mount.

Average the number of visitors to Mount Athos is 170,000 to 190,000, with 1/3 being foreign. Most of the foreign pilgrims are Romanians, Serbs and followed by the Bulgarians.

The more riots and toxicity in the outside world increases, the more people who want to come to Mount Athos increases“, Mr. Stefanis noted.
