President Jair Bolsonaro signed a decree in which he increased the presence of representatives of environmental organizations and the private sector from 26% to 34% in the composition of the National Council for the Environment (Conama).
The Executive’s announcement comes on the day that the plenary of the Federal Supreme Court begins to judge a series of actions aimed at contesting or barring measures that the federal government took that would be weakening the fight against deforestation in the country.
The decree, announced in a statement from the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic this Wednesday, also increases the term of office of representatives appointed by state and municipal governments to two years.
“Thus, the government hopes to elevate the democratic principle and make it possible for decision-making processes to prioritize the efficiency, density and quality of decisions about public policies in the area of the environment”, says the statement.
