The Minister of Tourism is in Kalamata, Vassilis Kikilias, who yesterday represented the Greek government in the parade for the national anniversary of October 28. Today, accompanied by the former prime minister, Antonis Samaras, he held a meeting at the city’s Chamber, a visit to the Messenian Products Exhibition of the Municipality of Kalamata and a meeting with local government bodies and the hoteliers of Messinia, while he participated in an event at the city’s Spiritual Center with the theme ” Messinia: Tourist destination all year round”.

In his statements, Mr. Kikilias emphasized that “tourism in our country is inextricably linked with the products of the Greek land, with the unique Greek gastronomy and with tradition”, pointing out that 2023 is a year of work and investment for the development of a new tourist model.

In this context, he invited local government bodies, entrepreneurs and tourism professionals to be informed about the projects financed by the Recovery and Resilience Fund (RRF) that will be announced in the near future, with the aim of building and developing tourism infrastructure ( tourist ports, jetties, accommodation, hiking trails, ski resorts, gastronomy, projects for disabled access, etc.), which will upgrade the Greek tourism product and contribute decisively to the attraction of “quality travelers”, bringing additional income and strengthening – in addition to the dozens of tourist occupations – the primary sector, health shops, commerce and the average Greek family.

With reference to tourism in Messinia and the city of Kalamata, the minister expressed his joy at the fact that despite this year’s adversities, the strategy of the Ministry of Tourism has also borne fruit in the prefecture of Messinia, with the result of foreign arrivals at the airport “Captain Vassilis Konstantakopoulos » to surpass even the corresponding ones of 2019 (only in July it was +19% compared to 2019). At the same time, he underlined that all the necessary actions will be taken to upgrade the city’s airport, develop new infrastructure and promote the unique local products (olives, oil, wine, etc.) in order to highlight even more the tourism product of the region all over the world.
