Games in Brazil will have bigger increases like those of the Cup, says head of arbitration

One of the main novelties of the Qatar World Cup was the increase in stoppage time. And this trend should be present in Brazilian competitions from 2023 onwards, said this Monday (12) the chairman of the CBF arbitration commission, Wilson Luiz Seneme, to Rádio Itatiaia.

Normally, the referee would allow a maximum of five minutes more in each half, to compensate for stoppages with substitutions, goals and medical attention. What we saw in Qatar was an average of ten minutes per game.

In the 48 duels of the group stage, there was an average of 13.2 minutes of added time per game, according to a survey by the 365Scores platform. In the eight games of the round of 16, it dropped to 9.3 minutes.

Counting the five matches played by the Brazilian team, until the quarterfinals, the green-yellow team accumulated 52 extra minutes on the pitch, an average of 10.4 minutes per game.

“This greater rigor is a tendency. Not only in relation to the big loss of time in the game. But also the lateral throws, the delay in the goal kick, the so-called wax”, said Seneme to Rádio Itatiaia.

“Fifa has shown this concern. It is to deliver a greater amount of ball rolling to the public. It is a challenge for the Brazilian Championship. .”

According to the leader, the idea is that the increase is a way to make the game as fair as possible. “What we hope is that everyone’s attitude within football will benefit so that we have the ball rolling more and more. But if it doesn’t happen, that the referees are very strict in applying the times”, he concluded.
