Russian Foreign Ministry accuses Kyiv of denying basic rights to Russian-speaking population of Donbass
The head of Russian diplomacy Sergey Lavrov rejected Western accusations over the war in Ukraine at the UN Security Council on Thursday, arguing that the decision on the “special military operation” – as the Kremlin calls the invasion – was “inevitable” in order for Moscow to protect the Russian-speaking population of Donbass.
Speaking before his counterparts (including the Ukrainian) at the special meeting of the Security Council, Russia’s foreign minister accused Kyiv of denying basic rights to the Russian-speaking population of Donbass.
“The US and its allies (…) have covered up the crimes committed by the Kiev regime,” Lavrov claimed, refuting accusations of Russian military atrocities in Ukraine. He even stated that the attitude of the West towards Volodymyr Zelensky is as follows: “it’s a seat, of course, but it’s our seat”.
At the same time, he made it clear that Moscow rejects the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court in which Russia “has no confidence”, as he said.
“The referendums are a response to the Ukrainian president’s call to Russians to leave the country,” added the Russian Foreign Minister.
Call on the international community to oblige the president of Russia Vladimir Putin to account for the invasion of Ukraine addressed the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken speaking at the UN General Assembly.
