Moldova announced today that it does not recognize Russian “attempts to illegally annex” four Ukrainian regions that Moscow has partially seized and condemned Russia’s unjust war with Ukraine.

The small former Soviet republic is wary of Russia’s intentions, as Moscow has troops and peacekeepers in Moldova’s breakaway Transnistria region and Chisinau is heavily dependent on Russian energy resources.

“Our country reaffirms its strong support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders,” the former Soviet republic’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

Moldova’s pro-Western president said this week that her country, which borders Ukraine and Romania, must bolster its defenses because Russia does not respect its neutrality.

For her part, the president of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, condemned Russia’s decision to annex four Ukrainian regions.

“Conducting a mock referendum in support of a flagrant violation of international law and a violent annexation has no legitimacy or future. We reject such serious violations of international law and reiterate our full support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity,” she wrote. Zurabishvili, in a post on Twitter, reported the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform.

The Georgian president also condemned the plans to mobilize in the occupied territories of Ukraine and Georgia as yet another flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the two countries.
