At least four dead and six missing are so far the toll from the crash this afternoon of a Russian military aircraft in a residential area in the Russian city of Yeisk.

It is a Su-34 fighter jet that crashed into an apartment building, causing a huge fire that spread to an area of ​​about 2,000 square meters, according to the Russian emergency response service.

According to Russia’s Interfax, citing the local emergency ministry, five floors of the apartment building burned while the upper floors collapsed and about 45 apartments were damaged.

According to the TASS agency, the crash was caused by an engine fire. Russian news agencies point out that the pilots activated the automatic ejection system, adding that officials are trying to find information about victims on the ground.

Firefighters and ambulances are at the scene of the crash. The governor of the Russian Krasnodar region said for his part that “all fire and rescue units in the area have been deployed to extinguish the fire.”

Criminal investigation into the crash

As announced by the country’s investigative committee, a criminal investigation into the crash has already begun.

“Military investigators are ascertaining the circumstances and causes of the incident,” it said.

The city of Yeisk is located on the Sea of ​​Azov, just across the street from the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, which was devastated by shelling and a long siege in the first months of the Russian offensive.
