“The Ukrainian authorities estimate that mines have been placed in 30% of the country,” Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie said during her speech yesterday at Carleton University in Ottawa.
The Canadian government announced Monday that it is contributing 15 million Canadian dollars to purchase equipment needed to clear minefields in war-torn Ukraine.
This humanitarian aid will finance the purchase of equipment needed to locate and neutralize mines, unexploded ordnance and other dangerous remnants of war.
“The Ukrainian authorities estimate that mines have been placed in 30% of the country,” Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie said during her speech yesterday at Carleton University in Ottawa.
Canada will supply protective clothing to help protect Ukrainian demining experts and funding for advanced remote demining systems, especially in large areas such as fields.
In August, the State Department approved $89 million in funding to equip and train one hundred demining teams for one year. A US State Department official likened the work being done by Ukrainian authorities to post-war efforts in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos involving the US military in Southeast Asia in the 1960s and 1970s.
