Former Marine Convicted of Rape and Murder Executed in Mississippi

His execution yesterday was the first in Mississippi this year and the second since 2013, as authorities in the state have struggled in recent years to procure the deadly chemicals they use for the purpose.

A former Marine officer who confessed to raping and murdering a 16-year-old girl in 2000 was executed on Wednesday in the state of Mississippi.

THE Thomas Edwin Lowden, 58received a lethal chemical injection at 18:00 (local time; today 02:00 Greek time) at the overcrowded Parchman prison in this conservative southern US state.

The ex-marine had confessed to abducting her Lisa Gray in 2000, when he found her on a country road, where her car was left with a tire.

The former non-commissioned officer, machine gunner and recruiter for this branch of the US armed forces admitted to raping the teenager repeatedly in his closed van and then strangling her.

He was found the next day on the side of the road with “I’m sorry” carved into his chest with a knife, according to documents.

Twhere the death penalty was imposed in 2001.

The death penalty continues to apply in about half of the 50 US states, but so far this year only five (Alabama, Arizona, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas) have implemented it.
