London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced on Monday night that the festive events that were to take place in the British capital on New Year’s Eve were canceled, due to the rapid increase in the incidence of the Omicron variant in Britain.
“With Covid-19 infections at record levels in our city and in the United Kingdom, I am determined to do everything possible to stop the spread of the new variant and to ensure that health services are not burdened,” the statement said. of the mayor. “This means that we will not be organizing the event with 6,500 people in Trafalgar Square on New Year’s Eve,” he explained. “It’s very frustrating for many Londoners, but we need to take the right steps to curb the spread of the virus,” he said.
Instead of the event, the BBC will broadcast an “impressive show” which will refer to the most important events of 2021.
London follows the example of Paris, which announced on Saturday that it was canceling fireworks and concerts on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées. Morocco, for its part, has imposed a curfew from midnight until 6 a.m. on New Year’s Eve.
