Putin: Why he worries about Afghanistan-Tajikistan border – The danger and the “defense cushion”

by

The security situation on the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border is a matter of concern, Russian President Vladimir Putin said today, describing it as a threat that Moscow has sought to mitigate by strengthening its military base in Tajikistan with weapons and other equipment.

“Currently, the situation on the border with Afghanistan is a matter of concern,” he said, referring to a meeting with Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon. .

“Our military base, which we once set up together, is evolving nonetheless and is one of the key elements for security in the region,” he said.

The penetration of Islamist militants from Afghanistan into Tajikistan and other former Soviet republics of Central Asia is a cause for concern in Moscow, which sees the region as a buffer zone along its southern border.

Russia announced this month that it was strengthening its military base in Tajikistan with 30 new tanks and that its forces were conducting anti-missile exercises there.
