China and the US should handle the issue of the Chinese balloon that entered US airspace calmly, properly and without the use of force, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a regular press conference today.

“It was an unexpected, isolated incident,” Mao said when asked about the seriousness of the incident.

When asked when China learned the balloon had been in US airspace, she said after Washington informed Beijing about the balloon, then “we immediately did checks”.

At the same time, Mao explained that the balloon spotted in Latin America is Chinese and used for political purposes, stressing that it has limited self-navigation capability.

Colombia’s air force announced Saturday that what may be a balloon was detected by the country’s air defense system on Friday morning.
