American millionaire Robert Durst, investigated for three murders and sentenced to life in prison in September, died this Monday (10), aged 78, in the state of California. The information was released by The New York Times.
Attorney Chip Lewis, responsible for Durst’s defense, confirmed the death, which took place at San Joaquin General Hospital, where he was taken for medical examination. There, Durst went into cardiac arrest and could not be revived, Lewis said.
The American was serving a life sentence at the California Health Center for the murder of Susan Berman, a longtime friend and confidant, whom he shot at point blank range in 2000. Shortly after his conviction, he was infected with the coronavirus and had to be taken to the hospital to receive mechanical ventilation.
The chase game between him and the US Justice began nearly 40 years ago, when his wife, Kathie, disappeared on the night of January 31, 1982. At the time, the case gained press attention because Durst was heir to a family that grew rich in New York real estate and owns several important buildings, including a portion of the World Trade Center.
For four decades, Durst was suspected of killing three people: his wife, his friend Susan Berman, who was shot in her home in Benedict Canyon, Los Angeles, in 2000; and Morris Black, a neighbor who was shot in Durst’s Galveston, Texas, apartment in 2001.
After many back-and-forths, a trial in New York found Durst responsible for his wife’s death. The jury found him guilty based on his record and his efforts to try to hide the information. However, the victim’s body has not yet been found.
