Ukrainian forces have regained control of the city of Trostyanets in northeastern Ukraine, where fighting with Russian troops is raging, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said today.
“The town of Trostyanets in the Sumy region has been liberated by Russian occupation forces,” the ministry told the Telegram, citing the 93rd brigade of the Ukrainian armed forces.
The recapture of this city, located about 50 km from Sumy and numbering about 20,000 inhabitants before the Russian invasion, seems to be a significant advance of the Ukrainian army, which launched counterattacks in some areas.
According to Kyiv, Trostyanets was occupied by the Russian armored division Kantemirovskaïa.
“The Russian army has left Trostyanets abandoning weapons, equipment and ammunition,” the Defense Ministry said in a press release, which posted photos of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians among buildings that had been severely damaged.
These allegations could not be verified by an independent source.
