In order to obtain votes from the evangelical bench in exchange for the approval of the Transition PEC, which grants the new government license to spend above the ceiling on assistance programs, Lula’s team is still turning a blind eye to the nomination of lawyer Alexandre Freire to occupy a vacancy in advisor of Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency).
Freire never worked in the area of telecommunications and, according to the agency’s technicians, he was appointed by deputy Cezinha de Madureira (PSD-SP), pastor of the Assembly of God of Brás–Ministry of Madureira and who presides over the Evangelical Parliamentary Front of the Chamber.
Last year, the parliamentarian participated in a motorcycle, riding on the back of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). Madureira even spoke at the Planalto Palace, alongside Bolsonaro and the Minister of Communications, thanking the sanction of a bill that favored religious channels.
According to congressmen and technicians from the Ministry of Communications and Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency), the religious acted directly for the approval of the law.
The sanctioned law, authored by the deputy himself, forced telephone operators to carry religious channels in their pay TV packages.
This year, Congress passed another measure, ensuring that old UHF pay-TV channels can be regularized as pay-TV channels.
The group of missionary RR Soares, from the International Church of Grace of God, was one of the main stakeholders in the new law. RR Soares, an active Bolsonaro electoral corporal, owns 4 of the 22 channels benefited by the sanction of the new law. The rule also benefited companies linked to broadcasters, such as Band.
Technicians from the agency and the Ministry say that, with the new channels guaranteed by the legislation, the religious broadcasters can negotiate more advertising and, eventually, sell even the channels themselves for higher prices.
