Triumph of the Greek team in the open European Youth Championship of the 420 category that ended in Vilamoura, Portugal.
Our sailors won three medals! The gold with Panagiotis Sotiriou – Simeon Michalopoulos in the U17 category, the silver with Dimitra Bartholomeiou – Metaxia Gogou in the U19 women’s category and the bronze with Iakovina Kerkezou – Danae Giannoulis in the U17 juniors.
Then, the Optimists, where in Turkey Greece became the third power in the world among 61 countries, and at 420 our sailors are at a very high level and the future belongs to them. Their excellent performances and the consecutive medals in the biggest international competitions that they bring to the country prove in practice the very serious and organized work that is done first by themselves and, of course, with the support of their coaches, their groups and the Federation.
In detail in the U17 there were 9 races and Panagiotis Sotiriou – Simeon Michalopoulos won the first place with 41 penalty points among 48 boats. The positions of the athletes of the I.O.P. were 16 (removed as worst), 7, 15, 5, 4, 1, 5, 3 and 1 respectively.
In the U19 women’s category, Dimitra Bartholomeiou – Metaxia Gogou climbed to the second step of the podium among 33 boats. The athletes of N.O.P. Faliro finished 16, 5, 23, 5, 4, 7, 10, 35 (they removed her as the worst) and 20 respectively. In the general of 107 boats from 19 countries (along with the boys) they took 9th place with 90 points.
In the junior U17 category, Iakovina Kerkezou – Danae Giannoulis of I.O.P. won the bronze medal in a total of 18 boats. Their positions were 1, 16, 10, 49 (removed as the worst race), 20, 5, 1, 16 and 10 respectively. In the general standings of 48 boats from 12 countries (along with the boys) they finished 7th with 79 points.
In the same general category, Athanasios Lachanis – Georgios Heraklis Michalopoulos of the I.O.P. finished 9th with 106 points, Nikitas Melissaratos – Filippos Koulouris of N.O.T. Kallithea 14th with 125 b. and Maria Ioanna Sarikavazi – Lydia Rapti of N.O. P. Falirou 16th with 132 points and 5th in juniors.
In the general U19, Dimitris Bitros – Cleo Souliotis of I.O.P. took 10th place with 91 points and Dimitris Sourlatzis – Nikolaos Sourlatzis also from I.O.P. they were 17th with 127 points.
