Nelson de Sá: Taiwan and Holland bypass Biden in chip wars

by

In the Financial Times, about the announcement two weeks ago, “Biden goes it alone in his commercial attack on China.” Just below, “United States takes great risk in imposing chip export controls without allies on board.” Among others, without Taiwan and the Netherlands.

Bloomberg points out that the giant TSMC, from Taipei, and Biren, from Shanghai, “reviewed and concluded” that their artificial intelligence chip escapes commercial restrictions – and can replace, in the Chinese market, the similar one from the American Nvidia, this yes barred.

The American consultancy Bernstein Research reached the same conclusion. The BR100 chip (reproduction below), designed by Biren and produced by TSMC, was commercially presented less than two months ago at the Hot Chips 34 conference in Santa Clara, Silicon Valley.

And Dutch giant ASML predicts little effect from Biden’s restrictions on its exports. “The fact that we are a European company, with little American technology, creates this situation where the direct impact on us is quite limited”, says its CFO.

BIDEN NOW THREATS MUSK

Bloomberg reported that the “Biden administration is considering reviewing” the eventual purchase of Twitter by Elon Musk, for “his friendly stance towards Russia”. And the website Axios reports that the billionaire and platform, in response, want to close the deal by the end of next week.
